It’s every girl’s favorite time of the year. Prom is right around the corner, and many McDowell students have already purchased their perfect dresses. Adriana Sornberger and Taylor Eaton, juniors at McDowell High School, have both found their dresses.
“It was hard to pick one dress, I tried a lot of different dresses before finally finding the one I liked. I tried to stay away from trying on white dresses because my homecoming dress was white,” Eaton said.
Eaton decided on a blue straight fitting dress with a green, blue, and white jeweled top and a slit in the side for the big night.
Eaton and Sornberger both purchased their dresses from Bridal Elegance, just one of the many local stores to purchase prom dresses. There are also other stores that carry prom dresses such as Bridal Elegance, Sears, JCPenney, David’s Bridal, and Macy’s.
Even if you don’t have all of the money right now, Bridal Elegance offers layaway, so prom-goers can pay a monthly payment with a down payment. Some students also are willing to take a bit of a drive to find the perfect dress. The Winner, a dress shop in Sharon, Pa., has thousands of dresses to choose from.
Sornberger paid $640 for her dress, and Eaton paid $500. Instead of paying the hefty designer prices, some girls choose to shop at places like Plato’s Closet or The Sassy Peacock. They offer dresses that have been consigned, and therefore allow for a more budget friendly way to look good on prom night.
There are also some online alternatives too such as Poshmark, Mercari, and Vinted. Which all have brand new and gently used dresses.
Even if though they didn’t purchase their dresses from a consignment store, Eaton and Sornberger plan to sell their dresses after prom.
Another new option is renting a prom dress. There are many online websites that do this. An example would be Rent the Runway, where girls rent a dress and send it back after the event.
One last way to get a prom dress is simply borrowing a dress from a friend or family member.
“Buy something you’re comfortable in, something you really like. Don’t buy it because it’s the most wanted dress or your friends pressure you. There is no price on beauty so wherever the dress is from, it will look great,” said Eaton.
